Once you have a pest or rodent problem, it seems no matter what you do, they keep coming back. Rodents, especially, will return to the places where they can get food. Whether that food is dog food left out, birdseed in a bird feeder, or scraps thrown out in the compost pile, food is a necessity of life. Rodents are just as interested in survival as we all are. You can try so many different things on your own to get rid of them, but when they keep coming back, it may be time to enlist the experts in rodent control services at Northern Colorado Pest and Wildlife. Call today: 970-330-3929 or 303-746-9556.
Why worry about a rodent or two?
You can literally be surrounded by rodents — from the squirrels that clamor on your roof to the mice that squeeze through the tiniest of holes in your kitchen to pocket gophers turning your back lawn into a Caddyshack backdrop to the voles nesting in juniper bushes on your property and eating tree roots. If you are not careful, you could inadvertently be home to a lot of little rodents whose populations can grow exponentially. And all have great memories of where they got their food, water, and shelter.
Of course, to have a problem like this, you would likely have to live in a more rural setting, which Northern Colorado still provides. Living near the mountains or the plains could put you smack in the middle of nature’s creations. A rodent problem, however, is not a wildlife special on your television streaming service. Any one of these rodents can wreak havoc on your home and property, and potentially your sense of well-being. Have you ever gone to bed at night listening to rustling in the walls next to your bed?
Do you know when it is time to seek rodent control services?
We know that for many people, the first order of business is to fix the problem on your own. But without knowing your foe, their habits, their biology, and patterns, you may be outwitted or at least numerically overwhelmed. I have been educated at Colorado State University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology and my master’s degree in entomology. I take that education and use it daily to help residents and business owners identify and eradicate or move wildlife and pests from their homes in as humane a way as possible. I teach everyone on my team to do the same. Why? Because we believe all animals serve a role in the environment.
Do you know if you have enough of a problem for rodent control services?
Sometimes we do not catch our infestations fast enough. We may not see the signs, or we may not even be looking for signs of damage to warrant rodent control services. We have compiled a small list of signs of damage caused by rodents.
- Chewed or Gnawed Items: Mice, rats, and squirrels are notorious chewers and can cause damage to various materials in your home or property. Look for chew marks on wood, plastic, electrical wiring, insulation, and even furniture. These marks may appear as small, irregularly shaped holes or indentations.
- Droppings: Rodents, including mice, rats, and squirrels, leave behind droppings that can indicate their presence. Mouse droppings are small and pellet-shaped, resembling black grains of rice, while rat droppings are larger and more capsule-shaped. Squirrel droppings are larger and elongated, resembling pellets. Keep an eye out for droppings in areas where rodents frequent, such as along baseboards, in cabinets, or near food sources.
- Nesting Materials: Rodents and squirrels use shredded materials like paper, fabric, insulation, and plant matter to build nests. Check for nests in secluded areas such as attics, basements, crawl spaces, and behind appliances. Nests may appear as messy, compact piles of materials.
- Grease Marks: Rodents frequently travel along the same paths, leaving behind greasy marks from their fur and bodies. Look for dark, greasy smudges along walls, baseboards, and entry points. These marks may indicate rodent activity and the presence of established travel routes.
- Strange Noises: Rodents and squirrels are often most active at night, so you may hear scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds coming from walls, ceilings, or floors. Pay attention to any unusual noises, especially in quiet areas of your home, as they could indicate the presence of rodents.
- Visible Damage to Outdoor Areas: Pocket gophers and voles can cause damage to outdoor vegetation, roots, and underground infrastructure. Look for signs of tunneling or burrowing in your yard, garden, or landscaping. Plants may appear damaged or disturbed, and you may notice mounds of soil or raised ridges on the surface of the ground.
- Unusual Pet Behavior: Pets, especially cats and dogs, may exhibit unusual behavior if they detect the presence of rodents or squirrels. Watch for signs of increased alertness, scratching or pawing at walls or furniture, or attempts to access areas where rodents may be hiding.
By keeping an eye out for these signs of property or home damage caused by mice or rats, squirrels, pocket gophers, and voles, you can catch infestations early and take action to address them with rodent control services before they cause significant harm.

One thing clients should know is that sometimes even we have to come back to the property to follow up on our treatments for rodent control services. Some of the pests and wildlife are crafty or they are too large in number. Our clients can pick their service and how often we return to control any recurring pest and/or wildlife problems.
We love it when our happy clients seeking rodent control services leave us five-star reviews for our services, like this one about a recurring mouse problem:
“Aaron came by to look at our house this morning and was awesome! We’ve been dealing with a mouse issue for quite a while, and despite tackling the issue ourselves, the little guys keep sneaking through the cracks (literally). Aaron helped us identify key entry points and coached us on how to address the issue ourselves. He was fast, nice, and really professional. Will definitely use their services in the future!” — Juliet Lee
