There Are Typically Two Scenarios That Draw a Skunk to The Area
There is nothing worse than having a skunk on your property. Many homeowners become aware of this after a beloved pet gets sprayed or they start to smell the odor of a skunk in the home. There are typically two scenarios that draw a skunk to the area. The first is the skunk has made a den somewhere on your property to raise their litter. These dens are typically dug underneath a concrete porch, sidewalk, shed or decking. This is done early in spring (February to May) in Colorado. The second scenario is when it is outside of the baby season and there is just a skunk in the neighborhood. In this case the skunk may still use the den or may just be passing by. This time of year, the skunks tend to be more nomadic and only visit the property a few times a week. Remember that adult skunks are nocturnal (active at night), and if you see one during the day you should definitely stay away because it could be sick or injured.
Treatment For Skunks
Treatment for skunks can be achieved in two different ways, including trapping and one-way doors. In most cases a one-way door will be used to remove the skunk and possible litter from the den and the door prevents them from returning. Once we are confident there are no skunks left in the den, the one-way door is removed, and the den is sealed off to prevent this from happening again in the future. If a one-way door is not possible due to location or difficulty, trapping is the alternative solution. In this scenario, we are required to euthanize the trapped skunk under Colorado law. This is an unfortunate part of our job as we discourage harming the animals, but the law is there for a reason. The law protects the movement of rabies and that is why they cannot be relocated, and no, all skunks do not have rabies.
At Northern Colorado Pest and Wildlife Control we take great pride in our animal humaneness and will do everything possible to re-home the skunks without harming them. That is why we attempt to use one-way doors before trapping is done. In the event of baby skunks, the job may be delayed until the babies can come out of the den on their own, before putting the one-way door over the den.
How Much Does It Cost To Remove A Skunk?
The all-important question of price. Well, that will depend upon our site inspection, as all the jobs are unique. However, we can provide you with a range in cost. One-way skunk jobs will range in price from $289 to $489 and that will include removal of all the skunks from the den, exclusion of the den site and a one-year warranty on all sealed areas. The range in cost for trapping is around $489 +/- $100 and that will include trapping until all the skunks are out of the den or for two weeks if the skunk is just passing by the area. The cost on trapping is higher, because it includes the euthanasia of the skunk(s), exclusion of the den and a one-year warranty on the sealed areas. There is also a lot of work involved in trapping because the trap must be checked daily by state law, so the animal does not suffer in the trap for any unnecessary time.
